Peschiera del Garda is a jewel of architecture, art and culture located at the southern end of the 'Riviera degli Ulivi', as the Veronese shore of Lake Garda is called.
An important centre since prehistoric times, it was later a crossroads between the Alps and the Po Valley, Veneto and Lombardy. Its name dates back to the Longobard period, when the abundance of fish in its waters caused the Latin toponym 'Arilica' to change to 'Piscaria'.
It was the domain of the Scaligeri and Visconti families, but Peschiera del Garda only took on its characteristic urban form under the Serenissima Republic of Venice. In the second half of the 16th century, legions of architects developed important urban works such as the Fortress and the imposing pentagonal walls. This extraordinary defence system was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 as one of the 'Venetian defence works between the 16th and 17th centuries: Land State - Western Sea State', a transnational serial site.
Today, the historic centre is home to shops, hotels and many restaurants that delight the palates of tourists with traditional Garda dishes.
At the entrance to Peschiera del Garda there are docks and facilities for sports activities, while inland there is a long cycle path connecting it with Mantua. Nearby, we recommend a visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino, a monument of national importance and pilgrimage destination for thousands of believers.
